Here at Dock & Bay, we’re celebrating in style as we have just turned 4 years old, woohoo! We want to share our epic journey so far with you guys. If you’re interested (of course you are), then just keep reading! Just like the ocean waves, we’ve had some ups and downs, but thanks to you lovely lot for buying our towels, our journey has only really just begun, as we have some BIG things in store for you over the next year or so.
So how did it all get started? Who are we? Where are we going? Who are these two strange guys below? Well, you’re about to find out, so let’s step back in time!
Back in September 2015, our founders, Andy & Benno (as you'll see above they are very serious chaps) launched our first 4 towels in the UK - Bondi Blue, Cancun Green, Boracay Yellow and Waikiki Coral. If you fancy finding out how Dock & Bay actually started, then head on over to this page here - yep, it involved a few too many drinks and a curtain… Around the same time, our first photoshoot happened in the beautiful Sydney, by none other than our photographer Emma, who also happens to be Ben's wife.
Just several months later in December 2015, the pair headed over to Australia to set up Dock & Bay down under. Ben actually decided to never leave Aus, meaning dealing with the time difference today can be pretty challenging, as our HQ is based in London (cheers Benno, but we don’t blame ya!). At the beginning of 2016, we also went live in the US, making our towels already pretty global.
It all seemed to be going swimmingly until Andy & Ben attempted to launch a Kickstarter campaign in March 2016, to bring out a range our Round Beach Blankets. Basically, that was a big ol’ fail, sorry guys. But, what goes around comes around (get it?!), as you guys absolutely love our round towels today, and, something BIG was just around the corner.
The following year, after already turning over £1m since launching, the big bosses decided to step into the Dragons' Den (UK) dressed to impress in flip-flops (yes, you read that correctly, see above). With their passion for stripes (and definitely not fashion), they won the heart (and wallet) of Deborah Meaden. This appearance along cleared out our warehouses, meaning it was time to restock, with bigger and better things! If you've not already seen the video, then who even are you?! You can check it out here.
Also in 2017, Dock & Bay hired their first staff member, and moved into an office space in London - where the team were told off for having too much fun… ugh get a serious job guys!
If everything wasn’t already going great enough, in April 2018, we took 18 people on a trip of a lifetime to Bali, for a week-long campaign, Colour of Summer. Some of them loved it so much that they got tattoos of our deckchair logo (yep for real!). Sorry Andy & Ben, the rest of the office haven’t booked in for ours just yet…).
By August of 2018, we had sold over 500,000 towels globally (that’s a lot of stripes!), and we were growing rapidly, with new products, colours & designs coming out of every orifice. You guys have been going crazy for our super soft, super absorbent, lightweight and gorgeous towels since we began, and we can’t thank you enough!
And today? Well 2019 has been crazy busy here in the office and we are super proud. We now ship globally with warehouses in the UK, US, Canada and Australia, and we are about to become a team of 10 in the UK, with 3 down under (yep we’re still pretty small considering!). We have done some epic photoshoots in amazing locations, including Bali, Australia, Hawaii, Miami and Mexico!
If you want to get to know the rest of the team, keep an eye out on our Insta stories, as we will be sharing some behind the scenes with you! Warning: there are two super cute office dogs if you didn't already know.
So that’s where we have come so far, and there have been a bunch of things going on in between too to make sure our awesome products are the best they can possibly be for you all! We have lots of goodies in the pipeline for you, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled, by following our Instagram, taking a look at our Facebook page, and signing up for our mailing list (you won’t get spammed, promise), where you can grab yourself a cheeky discount!
